About

Agroforestry, Inc. was founded in 2007 by William Gibbs and Iris Chacon in order to implement on a large-scale the superior growing techniques of agroforestry principles in tropical food production. Agroforestry, Inc. utilizes breadfruit (altocarpus altilis) as the anchor plant in its growing systems. The company purchased 24 acres of land in Santa Barbara, Honduras in 2010 since the area is ideal for breadfruit production and began filling the property with grafted breadfruit trees and perennial peanuts as a nitrogen-fixing ground cover.

In December of 2015, the first shipment of fresh breadfruit was exported to the United States and Canada.  From 2016 to 2018, the breadfruit was processed into chips for the local Honduran market and sold well.  In 2019, a modern packinghouse was constructed and the first shipment of frozen breadfruit tostones was exported to Puerto Rico in March of 2020. Baked breadfruit was first exported to Miami in February 2021 and has since replaced tostones as its core product. Since late 2019, Agroforestry, Inc. has disseminated over 1,200 breadfruit trees to its local associate producers in order to provide them with alternative incomes (breadfruit is harvested 2 times per year) and increase the growing acreage and availability of raw materials. The company continues to grow and expand its customer base and promotes awareness and acceptance of delicious baked breadfruit. The use of carbon-friendly agroforestry techniques in breadfruit production is always implemented, thereby improving soil properties and allowing multiple income sources associated with agroforestry. Furthermore, we do not allow our associate producers to cut down existing forest for breadfruit plantings.
