Enhancing Global Food Security with Breadfruit Cultivation in a Changing Climate

This study highlights the growing food crisis, worsened by COVID-19, conflict, and climate change. Focusing on breadfruit (Artocarpus altilis) as a solution, it examines its cultivation viability in current and future climates. Using data and bioclimatic variables, six species distribution models were developed to identify viable breadfruit regions. Future projections (2061–2080) under various emission scenarios suggest a slight decrease in suitable global tropical and subtropical areas. Southeast Asia and the Pacific Islands may see stable or increased breadfruit suitability, while Latin America and the Caribbean face significant contractions. Sub-Saharan Africa emerges as a promising region for breadfruit expansion, despite overall yield quality being affected under high emission scenarios.
