The National Tropical Botanical Garden (NTBG) harbors the world’s largest living breadfruit collection at Kahanu Garden. With over 300 trees, it showcases more than 150 varieties from over 30 islands, including rare and extinct varieties. This collection is pivotal to NTBG’s Breadfruit Institute, focusing on conserving breadfruit diversity, scientific research, and sustainable agroforestry. Efforts include preserving unique varieties, exploring nutrient profiles, and enhancing breadfruit’s role in sustainable food security. Additionally, the Regenerative Organic Breadfruit Agroforestry project in McBryde Garden, Kauai, serves as a public platform for promoting diverse, sustainable food systems.
